Our History
St. Francis of Assisi basic School is managed by the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Assisi and has been in existence since 1982. It is in the sisters calling to look closely at the felt need of the community they live in. It was identified that they were a lot of poor children who needed quality education in the area of Makeni.
Makeni area is found in the southern part of Lusaka about 5 Kilometers away from Lusaka town. The sisters scouted for funds from charitable organization in Holland and constructed the pre-school and later sourced money from Caritas of Germany and Development Fund to build the Primary.
In 1982, St. Francis of Assisi school started as a pre-school and later in 1992 it became a Primary school. It was officially opened by Honorable Nathan Mangilashi MP Deputy Minister of Education by then and blessed by his grace, Archbishop Adrian Mungandu.
In 1999 the Sisters with the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) applied for funds from Zambia Social Investment Fund (Zamsif) under the Ministry of Finance and economic development to build the grade eight and nine classes. The school was officially opened as a basic school in 1999 and became grant aided. Since then, the community around and the school has been growing and the demand for children into school is on the increase.
ST. Francis prayer
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
Oh master grant that I may never seek to be consoled then to console,
To be understood, as to understand,
To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned
And in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen
